Spynergy....A Brand New Chapter....CycleBar

We opened the first Boston-area cycling studio in January of 2005.  The ride has been amazing.  130 different instructors have taught a combined 15,000 plus classes, and over 9,000 indoor cyclists have taken an estimated 275,000  “Spynergy Rides”.  We never dreamed that our small family business would experience anything near this kind of growth and acceptance.   Equally exciting is that we’ve watched the development of a vibrant, closely connected community that has grown up around the studio...a community  built around a simple idea:  working out can be fun!  We are proud and grateful to be a part of it.

OK, now the big news.....Along the way, we’ve learned a thing or two about what makes this kind of business tick, and we’re bringing that knowledge to an exciting new project.  Spynergy's "next chapter".

We are beyond thrilled to announce that the Spynergy model is expanding.   We have formed a brand new company called CycleBar that is creating the very first dedicated cycling studio franchise company.  CycleBar studios will be modeled directly after the Spynergy concept, and our long term plan is to help launch and support hundreds of similar studios around North America…and beyond!  Our hope is that the kind of energy fueled, music-driven, unique fitness experience we see in Wellesley, can be replicated in other communities around the country.  Why not?!

The new company is called CycleBar (and not Spynergy), for trademark reasons.  For that reason, you will see a name change reflected in our signage and website over the next few months.

Yes, we are changing our name....but not to worry, the “CycleBar Ride” will be the very same experience that we have cultivated at Spynergy over the years.   Rest assured, the same instructor team you know is  fully committed to the Wellesley studio, and still focussed on creating awesome class experiences and workouts for this community.

1000 thanks for all your support over the years, and if you have any questions what-so-ever about the new company, please don’t hesitate to ask.

The CycleBar Ride (formerly The Spynergy Ride)

When people ask “what are your classes like?”…..it’s a hard question to answer. We like to think all our classes have 2 things in common 1) they’re great workouts, 2) they’re great fun.

BUT…..we don’t have a standard formula (like many studios) so classes vary widely.

You cannot generalize about The CycleBar Ride because every instructor has the freedom to create their own experience. Each instructor has “tools”: music, video, performance metrics, choreography, hand weights…..and each instructor uses these tools to create their own unique class experience. Here is a classic example from Renu”

“………As teachers, we seek to evolve our style to keep our classes exciting, engaging and fresh……I have recently added some new elements to my well established profiles, I took a little risk……this summer I re-imagined what an even more fun ride would be - something that is still authentic, but also adventurous. In short, I "RENUvated" my ride by adding select upper body moves while cycling that would elevate heart rate to new heights, engage core plus arms and, allow riders to immerse themselves in rhythmic movements that are both challenging and soothing………These moves are just a fresh "add-on" and by no means a departure from my typical ride…..the class still features high intensity, beat driven, FUN!.....Give it a try!......”

We pride ourselves on a variety of classes --- multiple music genres, different class elements, musical theme classes, and most of all, a variety of instructor styles.  Thanks for exploring our classes!

Complete with the same Spynergy fun, buzz and community!

Our new bikes are the very top of the line Schwinn AC Performance Plus bikes....with a new kind of "magnetic resistance" they provide a silky ride with consistency in the gearing --- and a console that gives you the ability to view/measure your cadence, power output, heart-rate, calories burned and estimated distance.  If you are motivated by data, this is a great tool....if you prefer to go data-free, just leave the light off on the console!

WOW - The kind of testimonial we love to hear!

"Last year, and not for the first time, I stopped making monthly donations to my comprehensive health club and quit.  I had always  started highly motivated, signed up for classes and personal training and then not stick to it…shocking I know.

So, I thought about what I liked about the health club choices and my #1 "stick to" fitness routine was Spin classes. " If I could just stick with something I really like and consistently do it over time without quitting", I thought.

Then my daughters both got engaged… and planned weddings 4 months apart.. and well, the motivation to lose that excess weight and get in shape  significantly rose.

So in April, I tried Spynergy (Now CycleBar).......I REALLY loved the space, and convenience of towels, water, bathroom, changing room, and on-line sign ups or drop-ins.   I loved the variety of music and atmosphere… all different kinds of people and ages wanting to keep in shape (serious bikers, students, moms and older folks like myself trying to ward off weight gain that can come with aging) I  bought a series of classes  and was off and spinning 3 times a week!

On August 30th, Daughter # 1 got married.  I had lost 23 pounds since April and was feeling terrific in my MOB (Mother of the Bride) dress!  Now I must admit that wedding planning for an out of town wedding had it's stresses which zapped my appetite I am sure.  But I stuck with the spinning classes because it was close,  convenient and FUN!  I also knew that as I left the studio, dripping wet , I knew that I just had a great work out!

Thanks Spynergy for providing a great space, a variety of times and classes, and fun, productive work outs!

Sincerely,
MOB, waiting for wedding #2  on New Years 2015…and continuing to spin 3 x per week."

Burn Baby Burn: How to Make the Most of Your Workout

SPF 15...30...70.  If you don't want your skin to burn, you have plenty of options. But with a workout, we all want the burn to go on for as long as possible. And with an interval workout like the one you get at CycleBar (Formerly Spynergy Wellesley), you'll not only torch a ton of calories, you'll continue to burn more for hours after you get off the bike.

Excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) - known to most of us as afterburn - is scientifically proven.  In different studies, participants burned as many as 300-700 calories more in the 24 hours after they finished exercising.  Some keys to maximizing this benefit:

  • Work harder.  Not surprisingly, the harder you work during a workout, the better the afterburn.  While moderate exercise provides almost no afterburn, spend 45 minutes in a class like Spynergy's Surge 45, and after you leave, you'll continue to burn hundreds of calories more than you would have if you'd taken a walk.

  • Drink water. In one study, drinking 17 ounces of water before a workout resulted in a 30% metabolic rate increase, which peaked about 30 minutes into the workout.  So fill up at our water cooler before class, and keep drinking afterward.

  • Do intervals.  If you've seen the countdown screen for Tabata time in Bev's class, you know what we're talking about.  If not, it's time to try it.  Intervals throw your body out of homeostasis, and it can take up to 24 hours to restore balance.  Sounds bad, but it's actually very good for your fitness levels and calorie burn.

  • Eat Well.  Afterburn isn't a license to supersize it (unless you want to supersize yourself).

Join us and earn your afterburn!  CycleBar (formerly Spynergy Wellesley) has been providing fun, inspired indoor cycling classes to our neighbors in Wellesley, Natick, Weston, Wayland, Newton, Needham, Chestnut Hill and other Boston area towns since 2005.

Happy Father's Day!

If you’re a Dad, or someone who is looked up to as a father figure, Spynergy salutes you today! And while we’re thinking about Dads, who are usually busy, and not always as good about taking care of themselves as they once were, we thought we’d share a few reasons indoor cycling at Spynergy is an ideal workout for men:

1)  It’s hard.  A lot of us associate exercise with August double sessions, varsity try-outs and our inner college athlete.  If you want to work the way you used to, without the mean coaches and stress of getting cut, join us.

2)  It’s efficient.  You’re likely to burn about 400-800 calories in a 50-minute class at Spynergy, which means: Beef. Instead of chicken, it can be what’s for dinner. And if you ride with us regularly, you just might be able to look and feel more like your inner college athlete again.

3) It's fun.  The science shows that you’ll leave with a natural high, and we promise that time will fly by, and you’ll like the music. And contrary to what you might believe, at Spynergy, it’s likely that you won’t be the only guy here.

These Shoes Were Made for Cyclin'

spikes and bike

Well, maybe those shoes weren't.

But whether you’re new to indoor cycling or have been riding at CycleBar (Formerly Spynergy) for a while, you can use muscles more efficiently, ride with less pain and generate more power – all by going shoe shopping!  Seen people in class, and our instructors, with cycling shoes, and wondered whether they’re worth it?

“I don’t indoor cycle that often – do I really need a cycling shoe?”

While you can certainly get a great workout in sneakers, and all you really need for a class at Spynergy is a good attitude and the ability to show up, cycling shoes offer several key benefits:

  • Pain reduction
  • Increased power and efficiency through the entire pedal stroke
  • Increased stability on the bike

"Proper shoes are the most important piece of cycling equipment," says Matthew McMullen, of Landry's Bicycles. "Cycling shoes have a firm sole to efficiently transfer power from your feet to the pedals. The lack of support in sneakers allows the foot to collapse through the arch while pedaling, which may cause arch pain, tendon problems, or burning under the bottom of the foot."

Cycling shoes are much stiffer than sneakers, and are designed for what your body does on a bike (not while it's walking or running).  If you have foot or knee pain when you cycle, a professionally-fit cycling shoe could help. You’ll also get much more out of the “pull” part of the pedal stroke if you’re clipped in with cycling shoes, meaning that you'll not only work your quads, but your hamstrings and glutes as you pull up on the pedal.

“How do I know what kind of shoe to buy?”spin shoe

We recommend that you visit a quality cycling store like Landry’s on Rt. 9 in Natick.  The professionals there can assess your needs and your feet, and fit you in a shoe that will work on our bikes (any shoe that is SPD® (Shimano Pedal Design) compatible – will work).  Plus, Landry's will give you a 15% discount for being a Spynergy rider.

Because everyone’s feet are different, it’s important to get your cycling shoes professionally fitted so that the cleat will be in the right place underneath your foot.  This will reduce or eliminate knee and foot strain and pain.

Be sure to mention that you’ll be using the shoes for indoor cycling – while you can certainly use your Spin® shoes for road biking, road cycling shoes often have cleats that protrude and soles that are too slippery for walking around inside Spynergy.

Because I'm Happy (or I Will Be)

sunny sand

It’s June! It’s summer!  We’re happy!

Which got us thinking, naturally, about indoor cycling and being happy.  At this time of year,  some riders start taking their workouts outdoors when they can.  Many of us, however, don’t work quite as hard out there on our own as we do when Alex, Bill, Renu, Bev, Andy or Jake – or any of the great instructors at Spynergy – are leading and pushing us to give it even more than we thought we had.

Taking it to this next level is the key to releasing the Happy Hormones: endorphins.  When you work as hard as you do at Spynergy, your body will release endorphins, which will do lots of wonderful things, including:

1)      Suppress pain.  Endorphins are released by your pituitary gland when you (really) exert yourself. When you work as hard as you do in a Spin® class, your body is in a state where it’s expecting pain, so it releases endorphins to decrease pain.  Endorphins act just like opiates – without addiction.

2)      Create euphoria!  Runner’s high without the run?  That’s right!  Work hard with us this week, and get a guaranteed, free and addictiveless high.

3)      Make you happy :) Just as prescription anti-depressants work on your serotonin levels, so does the release of endorphins.  Studies show that just three indoor cycling workouts a week are as effective as the best anti-depressants. You don’t just feel good after a Spynergy class because you’ve worked out, you feel good because your body is releasing happy hormones.

Spynergy Wellesley has been providing our neighbors in Wellesley, Natick, Newton, Chestnut Hill, Wayland, Weston, Dover, Sherborn and other Boston-area towns with great music and super instructors leading fun indoor cycling classes since 2005.  Come ride with us!

Meet Your Instructor: Ten Questions for Renu

Renu 1_Spynergy_Portraits_248

Want to know more about your instructor before or after taking a class at Spynergy? Today we talk with Renu Shukla, a dedicated indoor cycling instructor with more than a decade of experience.

1. List your five favorite songs:

Yellow by Coldplay, Jai Ho by A. R Rahman, Lose Yourself by Eminem, Every Breath you take by Puff Daddy and Sting, Just Breathe by Pearl Jam

2.  Describe the flow of the music in your class/how you come up with a playlist:

I focus on creating seamless transitions where ending of the last song is a logical beginning of the next.  Each Playlist tells a story!  The playlist is the heart and soul of each workout – it’s a purposeful collection of songs/videos that seeks to energize, engage and challenge riders.

I am inspired by “The Voice” - I often find songs from past decades that are very “spin worthy” through this show.

3. Guilty music pleasure?

“Call me Maybe” - Carly Rae Jepson

4. What I know as a cycling instructor that you don’t know:

I always know when you don’t have enough resistance on that fly wheel!

5. It drives me crazy when: I see riders in my class: are texting, or pedaling backwards or even worse - texting while pedaling backwards...

But I love it when:  riders in my class take a collective sigh of relief after a seven minute climb!

6. What’s the secret, and what's your mantra?

It takes hard work each day.  Mix it up, Amp it up.  Always doing the same things will never get you different results.  My mantra?  Go Hard - You can do anything for two minutes...and Nothing Changes unless Something Changes.

7. The best nutrition/health tips I've gotten:

1) Good oils are healthy for you and do not make you fat; 2)  add heat to your food with herbs and spices, because this helps metabolize fat plus it makes food tastes better!

8. Top 5 movies:

Slumdog Millionaire, ShawShank Redemption, Home Alone I, Thelma and Louise, Frozen

9. Place you’ve visited that you’d go back to?

I was born in India, I left in 1986, and I haven't been back.  I long to visit.

10. What’s different about CycleBar classes?

It's more than a class - it's a place where you are always striving to create the best experience for your riders!  In return, you receive enormous appreciation, loyalty and gratitude from your classes.

CycleBar Wellesley has offered fun, energetic and inclusive indoor cycling classes to our neighbors in Wellesley, Needham, Newton, Weston, Dover, Sherborn, Natick, Wayland, Chestnut Hill and other Boston area towns since 2005.  Come ride with us!
